The idea

Markets alternate between quiet consolidation and fast expansion. A breakout trader identifies the quiet phase and positions for the expansion.

Setup

  • Chart: 1-hour to daily.
  • Tools: horizontal support and resistance, Bollinger Bands for the squeeze, ATR.

Rules

1. Find a clean range

At least two touches of both the top and bottom of a range, ideally with Bollinger Bands at their narrowest in 50+ bars.

2. Wait for a decisive close

A valid breakout is a candle that closes beyond the range by at least 0.5 × ATR. Wicks through the level don't count.

3. Enter on the retest

Many breakouts fail. Waiting for price to pull back and hold the broken level (old resistance becoming support) filters out a lot of false moves, at the cost of missing some runners.

4. Stop and target

Stop on the other side of the retest, or back inside the range. Target a move equal to the height of the range, or at least 2R.

Filters that help

  • Trade in the direction of the higher-timeframe trend.
  • Avoid entering minutes before major news; spreads widen and moves reverse.
  • Prefer active sessions (London and New York for forex).

Risk management

Risk a fixed 0.5–1% per trade and check the setup's reward-to-risk with the risk/reward calculator.

Plan the trade before you take it

Check the reward-to-risk of your setup and size the position so a stop-out costs only what you planned.
