Why Most Traders Fail Prop Firm Challenges (and How Not To)
Most failed challenges come down to the daily loss rule, oversizing and trading to the deadline. Here's how to give yourself a real chance.

The numbers
Pass rates are low across the industry. Topstep, one of the few firms to publish data, reported that 16.8% of its Combines were passed in 2025.
Reason 1: Breaking the daily loss limit
A 5% daily limit sounds generous until you risk 2% per trade and lose three in a row. Risk 0.5–1% per trade and set your own daily stop well inside the firm's, for example at half of it.
Reason 2: Oversizing to hit the target fast
Trying to make 10% in a week turns a strategy into a coin flip. Most challenges now have no time limit, so there's no reason to rush.
Reason 3: Not reading the rules
News windows, weekend holding, consistency rules and trailing drawdowns end accounts that were "in profit". Trailing drawdown is especially easy to misunderstand: the limit follows your highest balance. Every review in our prop firm comparison lists these rules.
Reason 4: No tested strategy
A challenge is a test of an existing edge, not a place to find one. Prove your strategy on a demo first, then check its typical losing streak with the drawdown calculator.
A simple plan
- Pick one documented strategy and backtest it.
- Risk no more than 1% per trade; 0.5% is safer.
- Stop for the day at half the firm's daily limit.
- Choose a firm with a static drawdown if you're new.
